This series consists of files created by White House aides at the request of Lyndon B. Johnson. The files contain correspondence, reports, and statements. The materials cover the Poor People’s Campaign organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. They contain materials on the leadership of the Poor People’s Campaign and its activities, as well as living conditions while it was camped in Washington, D.C. There are materials on the Johnson administration’s communications, assistance, and responses given to the campaign. The materials also cover the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil disturbances that followed. These materials contain reports on rioting throughout the United States and their impact on communities. They also contain materials on government monitoring, planning, response, and assistance related to the rioting.
